Introducing the second of 9 writing teams in the 2017 Musical Theater Lab, Sarah Rebell and Teresa Lotz! Each team will be presenting a new mini-musical in culminating lab concert performance, World Views, on July 8th 2017. These writers were selected through a competitive application process, and in these brief Q&As you’ll get some behind the scenes insight into their process and work.

Winners of the prestigious international Search for New Musicals were announced today at New Musicals Inc. in Los Angeles.

First Prize goes to Off The Wall with book & lyrics by Sarah Rebell, and music by Danny Abosch... Off The Wall will receive a workshop with the Academy Repertory Company, feedback from the NMI staff, and will be presented in concert as part of the STAGES 2015 Festival of New Musicals this summer in Los Angeles.

Sometimes branded under the sub-genres of "new musical theatre" and "musical theatre pop", these artists range from new, up-and-coming writers who were still in their undergrad a few years ago, to award-winning duos who've been on the theatre scene for years. The shows and song cycles written by these talents include both upbeat tunes and heartfelt ballads that are basically the love children of today's popular music and the Stephen Sondheim/Rogers and Hammerstein records in your grandparents' attic.

Teal Wicks, Alex Brightman and Joe Carroll were among the artists who took part in Past Is Present, a concert featuring the lyrics of Sarah Rebell, March 24 at the Metropolitan Room. Here are highlights from the evening. The 9:30 PM concert featured Rebell's lyrics paired with the music of composers Danny Abosch, Will Buck, Josh Freilich, Elizabeth Hagstedt, Teresa Lotz, Madeline Myers and Willem Oostheuysen.
